How apt are we to forsake all to follow Christ? In Mark 10:27 Peter speaks and says: “Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee”. And the Lord Jesus responds in Mark 10:29-30 “And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sister, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s, But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.” All, of what the Lord said in verse 30 sounded good until He said “persecutions”. We even love what He said after “persecutions”, ‘eternal life’. Many of us are under the impression that following the Lord Jesus should be everything coming up smelling like roses. We want to grab hold of and hold onto the sweet but complain, cry and have temper tantrums about the bitter. A rose is not just a flower that buds with beautiful petals and a lovely scent.
